Projection of the film “Georges Aperghis, Un mot d'après l’autre"
Georges Aperghis was born in 1945 in Athens, into an artist family. In 1963, he decided to move to Paris. Together with the actress Édith Scob, who would later become his wife, he discovered the world of theatre. Beginning in the 1970s, the composer created many works that contributed to the emergence of 'musical theater', a field in which he could give full scope to his boundless creativity.
In 1976, he gave this social and political commitment concrete form by founding ATEM (Atelier Théâtre et Musique) in Bagnolet. Varied in form and spirit, his lyrical work draws as much on his explorations of text (and the development of a contemporary recitative) as on his close collaboration with a chosen family of performers: actors, instrumentalists, vocalists. Fond of leading audiences down false trails, Georges Aperghis also enjoys engaging with other artistic forms, such as dance and the visual arts. Like an acrobat on a tightrope, he constantly takes risks, multiplying projects and creations in collaboration with some of the finest ensembles in Europe.
Today, Georges Aperghis is able to bring together the different pieces of his artistic puzzle into a poetic fabric that relies on the deconstruction of language to reconstruct a new sonic object—diverted, recomposed. This utopia, which calls upon a collective dream of democracy, draws equally on the instrumental forces of ensemble and orchestra and on the most advanced technologies.
The film follows the creation of his most recent work, Selfie in the Dark, dedicated to his wife Édith Scob. A self-portrait within a portrait, Un mot d'après l’autre takes us into the ever-active world of Georges Aperghis. From concerts to rehearsals, we discover the breadth of his creations and their striking originality.
Un mot d'après l’autre recounts his encounters, his work, his life. It is a music documentary made with others and for others.
