Mixed-Music
Works for acoustic and electronic instruments in real-time are gradually becoming a repertoire in and of their own. IRCAM partners with conservatories, music schools, and instrumental ensembles to organize a series of courses each year for music students and young professional performers. These courses provide an opportunity for the participants to become familiar with the different mechanisms of mixed music and to learn how to play instruments with electronics in new musical situations.
A true chamber music work between the instrumentalist and their electronic double, the interpretation of a mixed work requires constant listening and a heightened attention to the effect of the instrumental gesture. It raises questions of sound capture, of interaction with the real-time transformation of the performer's playing, of the relationship between the pre-recorded parts and their diffusion, of decentering and spatialization of the sound source.
This program is divided in three sections
- One or several workshops to discover new technology available for instrumentalists covering sound recording, processing, and broadcasting. The workshops will take a look at the most up-to-date investigations carried out at IRCAM in the field of instrument research
- Work sessions on mixed works to be held with an instructor, computer music designers, and perhaps even composers
- A public presentation of the pieces worked on throughout the year
Mixed Music Course with The Pôle Sup' 93
For several years now, IRCAM and the arts educational center known as the Pôle Sup'93 have built a program that offers 5 or 6 students in the musician-performer program (DNSPM) at the Pôle Sup'93 the possibility of discovering and working on mixed music pieces alongside IRCAM's computer music designers and sound engineers.
This educational program, which addresses specific challenges and difficulties of performing mixed music works, consists of several sessions (study of the instrumental and electronic score, playing with electronics at IRCAM) held from October to April. It ends with a public concert as part of the ManiFeste academy, which also brings together students in computer music design and sound engineering students from the École nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière.
