For several years now, the Musical Representations team at IRCAM has been developing—under the supervision of Gérard Assayag—a series of software programs dedicated to improvisation. The power of software such as OMax and then DYCI2, developed in particular by Jérôme Nika, is now further enhanced by machine learning, making the computer a true improvisation partner for musicians. This means that it is capable of responding to their ideas, of stimulating them, and of challenging them.

While the software has already proven its worth, Steve Lehman and Frédéric Maurin, artistic director of the ONJ, are taking it to the next level and creating Ex machina, a piece that pits the machine against the entire Orchestre National de Jazz. An experiment, in every sense of the word!
