ASAP - Creative Exploration and Transformation of Sound

Edit

Introduction to the ASAP audio processing plug-in collection
Edit

ASAP is a collection of audio plug-ins that allows creatively transforming sound. You are invited to play with the sound representation and the synthesis parameters to generate new sounds. The plug-ins can also be used to correct the defaults of the sound and to improve audio rendering. Thanks to the ARA2 integration, the spectral transformations are integrated into your editing workflow.

Objectives

Through practice and concrete examples, participants will know how to use the ASAP tools for transforming sound: cross-synthesis, pitch transposition, time stretching, spectral filtering and spectral remix. The underlying techniques based on modifying the frequency content of sounds will have been covered, so that the parameters can be understood and handled.

Public

Composers, musicians, sound engineers, sound designers, video editors, post-production professionals, teachers...

Prerequisites

Fluency in spoken and written English.
Comfortable using the Zoom video platform.
Good understanding of computer manipulation on MacOS, Linux or Windows.
Basic knowledge of digital audio workstations.

Training Period and Organization

6 hours of training, 2 half-days form 2:00 p.m. to 5 p.m.: October 15 & 22, 2024
10 students maximum

Program

Some details of the training program may be modified as a result of changes in the software on which they are based.

Wednesday October 15

  • Discover software environments and principles common to all plug-ins.
  • Understand the spectral representation of sound using the Fast Fourier Transform.
  • Control analysis and synthesis parameters according to the spectral content of the sound.
  • Familiarize yourself with and use remix and spectral morphing tools.

Wednesday October 22

  • Introduction to the ARA plug-in extension.
  • Presentation of ARA interfaces in ASAP plug-ins.
  • Use surface filters to isolate or attenuate sound elements.
  • Use transposition to correct pitch and create new melodies and timbres.
  • Use time stretching to synchronize tracks or generate new sounds.
  • Copy intonation from one voice to another using transposition and time stretching.

Educational Resources and Techniques

This professional course will take place online.

To follow the training in the best conditions, participants should download software prior to training:

Required Software

  • ASAP
The ASAP plug-ins collection is available in the VST, Audio Unit, and AAX formats (with the ARA extension for processing that requires entire audio information). Il is compatible with macOS 10.1 and higher (64-bit, Universal 2 - Intel/Silicon), Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) and Linux (64-bit).
  • Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) with ARA2 support
An updated version of one of these programs: Reaper (preferred), Cubase or Studio One

Optional Software

  • Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) without ARA2 support
Some aspects can also be covered with digital audio workstations that support VST3, Audio Unit or AAX formats, such as Live, Logic Pro, Pro Tools or FL Studio.

It is recommended to use two screens and have a good internet connection for this class.
Links to access the platform and instructions to follow the course remotely will be communicated to each participant.

Class Format: Training alternates between explanations on theory, studying examples to analyze, and hands-on exercises.

The environments available in the Premium membership are not included in the training price and are not supplied at the end of the training.

Supervision

  • Technical session on the first day of training to check trainees' installation
  • Attendance controlled; signature of an attendance sheet required every morning and afternoon.
  • A certificate at the end of the program is given to each participant with the results of the exam.

.Assessment

  • Assessment of acquired knowledge using a multiple-choice test taken at the end of training.
