This project centered on the design and testing of a form of therapy based on virtual reality to treat tinnitus — phantom auditory sensations that are felt in the absence of any external acoustic stimulation.
The principle of the study was to place patients suffering from tinnitus in a 3D virtual reality situation (visual and audio) to favor brain plasticity and reduce the discomfort caused by the subjective tinnitus. In practice, a sound and visual avatar of the tinnitus was created and gave the patient the means to controlling its location; both its direction and distance.
