Tristan Murail

Tristan Murail turned to composition after graduating in classical and Maghrebian Arabic from the École nationale des langues orientales and obtaining a degree in economics from the IEP in Paris. After studying with Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire, he went on to live at Villa Medici from 1971 to 1973, where he met the Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi. On his return to Paris in 1973, he co-founded the Ensemble L'Itinéraire, which quickly gained wide recognition for its fundamental research into instrumental playing and electronics. In the 1980s, Tristan Murail deepened his research into the analysis and synthesis of acoustic phenomena. He worked with IRCAM, where he taught composition from 1991 to 1997, and helped design the Patchwork composition aid program.

In 1997, Tristan Murail was appointed professor of composition at Columbia University in New York, where he taught until 2010. Back in Europe, he continues to give master classes and seminars all over the world, was a guest professor for three years at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and is currently a guest professor at the Shanghai Conservatory.
