Works for Augmented Piano

November 6,
8:30 p.m.

This recital highlights the incorporation of electronics in the very body of the piano. A symbiosis created by the works of Giulia Lorusso and Emanuele Palumbo.

“Through physical and direct contact between the transducers and the body of the instrument, the SmartInstruments technology negates the distance between the instrument and the loudspeaker. This not only questions the relationship between the instrument and electronics, but also forces one to imagine “bespoke” electronics for each instrument. In the case of the piano, the very fact that the sounds injected in the instrument are “colored” by the resonance and reverberation created by the piano’s body, pushed me to find a strong connection between the piano and electronics that made it possible for me to react, indirectly, with the natural resonance produced by the instrumental gesture, and to explore the land of the unknown, between illusion and epiphany. I have therefore dedicated myself to electronics that gradually become a mirror of instrumental gesture.” Giulia Lorusso

“Using this particular type of electronic system, the piano is capable of emitting a sound without the pianist playing, as if it were a magical object that comes to life. The pianist reaches out towards the strings, as if touching the sound, gathering it and bringing it towards the keyboard, their place to shine. My search for an ethereal and mysterious sound was the inspiration for the composition fo the work. The electronic part created a natural erosion of the piano sound in its resonance, obtained using this system that makes it possible to play are record the sounds directly in the piano. Using this process, the sound is purified and made smooth. This process symbolizes, for me, the search for an inner voice hidden in the heart of the instrument.” Emanuele Palumbo
