Michaël Levinas's Birthday
IRCAM, the Balcon, L’Itinéraire, and La Scala Paris celebrate the 70th birthday of the composer and pianist Michaël Levinas. The author of Nègres and La Métamorphose, this former student of Olivier Messiaen has traced his own trajectory, not far from spectral music, but that does not resolve everything in the timbre generator. Other leitmotivs can be found in his work. Polyphonic wefts, altering scales in proximity to Ligeti, so many invariants of writing; vocality, textuality, and an interest in musical phrasing, the metamorphosis of instrument-making, and advances in technology for synthesis. For this birthday concert, Michaël Levinas revisits a production carried out in 1991 at IRCAM: Préfixes. Le Balcon and the Itinéraire, two ensembles closely connected to Levinas’ musical adventure, come together to perform a virtually unknown, early work by Gérard Grisey for two groups of instruments: D’eau et de pierre.
