Le pari de l’œuvre de Morton Feldman : Rothko Chapel
The Rothko Chapel, located within the Menil Collection in Houston, houses fourteen monumental canvases by Mark Rothko, silent meditations in deep tones and haunting spiritual power. At its inauguration in 1971, Morton Feldman, a friend of Rothko and a member of the New York art world, was invited to compose a musical tribute. His piece, Rothko Chapel, for mixed choir, solo alto, and percussion, was inspired by the building’s architecture and acoustics. Though created for this specific space, the work is now performed across the world, each time renewing its musical and spiritual connection with Rothko’s painting.

Serie Le Pari de l'œuvre
The act of creation is a wager: on memory, on the future, on how a gesture will be received once it slips beyond the artist’s control. In every field, a work raises the question of its own necessity and its place in the world. Why do certain works from the past still resonate so powerfully today? This new series of monthly encounters invites a guest to share their personal connection with a specific work.
