The Fictions-Science series explores contemporary science and art. Conceived by the Bibliothèque publique d'information, La Parole- Centre Pompidou, and IRCAM, this series brings together artists, scientists, and the general public as we journey into the near future, our present, through innovations in the making, and their explosive or unsuspected effects on tomorrow's society.
On the bill for this new season are literature and artificial intelligence, an explosive duo in the heat of the moment. And to usher in an Olympic year, three encounters on the body in motion, the performing body, and the synchronization/desynchronization of movement.
Program
We are irresistibly drawn to act in a similar way to others. This disposition towards imitation and synchronisation, on both great and small scales, in fact underpins much of our collective action, although this is not desirable in all contexts. This is especially the case for contexts in which certain forms of unpredictability are valued, whether for strategic or aesthetic reasons. The quality of a group is thus measured as much in terms of its cohesion as by its capacity to admit the coexistence of relatively independent, singular behaviour. But while research on social cognition has already extensively examined the mechanisms governing the more or less automatic alignment of our actions, we as yet know very little about the factors allowing us to resist these very mechanisms.
This is the question which has driven the research-creation conducted jointly by a team of three scientists and members of the MILESDAVISQUINTETORCHESTRA! – an ensemble performing entirely improvised music, starting from irregular pulsations, and which explores the multiple effects of desynchronisation in movement and flow.
This fiction-science, produced in partnership with the festival Sons d’Hiver (Winter Sounds), will be an opportunity to report back on this work at the intersection of scientific protocol and artistic experimentation, starting with a musical performance by MILESDAVISQUINTETORCHESTRA! and followed by the screening of a documentary by Romain Al. about the project. A panel discussion will round the evening off, with the audience then being invited to join in the debate.
