Magnus Lindberg, with a world premiere on this evening’s program, has continually developed his relationship with IRCAM and the Ensemble intercontemporain since his Parisian stays in the 1980s. This same type of companionship concerns the two 40-something composers on this evening’s program: Franck Bedrossian and Roque Rivas. Chilean composer living in Paris, Roque Rivas was discovered through the Cursus program at IRCAM with his work Mutations of Matter created with a visual artist from the Fresnoy. An adept of architecture, in Campo abierto sets sounds in space using the model of visual perspective, imagining vanishing points and movements that move away from, or closer to, the listener. Franck Bedrossian—a Parisian living in Berkeley, California—refers to the final words of Arthur Rimbaud’s Vagabonds in which he bitterly evokes certain “brutal vigils” with Verlaine. The score follows the poet’s journeys in Europe and Ethiopia “bound to find the place itself and the code”.
