Sébastien Gaxie’s artistic research residency, which focuses on the sounds of the Amazonian forest, simply wouldn’t exist without him. Let’s meet with ecoacoustician and biodiversity specialist Jérôme Sueur, who was a crucial catalyst for this project–a project that could, in turn, provide his team at the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle with new tools to explore.

Électro-Odyssée : Deena Abdelwahed / Concert

“Diwan Midi” explores Arabic musical structures through the lens of electronic and live music. At the heart of the project is a prototype MIDI qanun developed at IRCAM, which blends traditional instrument-making techniques with digital control. The project juxtaposes Arabic ornamentation and melodic modes with contemporary compositional tools.

« Détails et retailles: A Sonic Conversation with Jazz by Matisse » by Claudia Jane Scroccaro

Part of a lineage of artists who have created musical environments for exhibition spaces, Claudia Jane Scroccaro takes on a particularly ambitious challenge: the Jazz series, presented in the exhibition Matisse. 1941 – 1954 curated by Claudine Grammont at the Grand Palais. It is a formidable undertaking (and one involving many “cuttings and recuttings”), which the Italian composer embraces with boldness by transposing the tools imagined by the painter into musical composition.

Boulez and the Founding of IRCAM 4/4: Meeting with Gerald Bennett

Gerald Bennett is the 32nd person interviewed as part of the RAMHO project. This interview took place on November 22, 2023, at the composer's home in Muttenz in the canton of Basel. Born in New Jersey (United States) in 1942, composer Gerald Bennett studied music at Harvard University. After graduating in 1964, he continued his studies in Switzerland at the Basel Conservatory. He was appointed professor in 1967 and director two years later. Approached by Pierre Boulez in 1971 to take part in the development of IRCAM, he left his post in 1976 to head the institute's Diagonal department until 1980.

1977-2023: The Espace de Projection Odyssey [1/3]

In the basement under Place Igor Stravinsky, IRCAM’s Espace de Projection is a temple for ‘spatial’ and music research, and the beating heart of IRCAM. Since 1977, it has been the stage and laboratory for a multitude of landmark works, technological innovations, formal inventions and unique interdisciplinary adventures. From Pierre Boulez to Natasha Barrett, Georges Aperghis and Olivia Grandville, a subjective retrofuturist journey, to mark the recent re-opening following works of a venue heralding a new world of sound.
