Deena Abdelwahed reinvents the performance of electronic music through intuitive improvisation, a practice central to Arabic music. Drawing on popular songs from the 1920s and 1950s, the artist and her accompanying musicians transform the conventional use of familiar instruments—most notably with a DIY MIDI qanûn developed at IRCAM. A new way of experiencing musical tradition.
