Biography

Liann J. Kang (South Korea, b. 1993) is a composer and vocalist. Her work explores liminal and ephemeral states in human experience and nature, with a particular focus on vulnerability, emotional depth, and unpredictability. Multisensory experiences are a recurring focus in her work, drawing on her experience of synesthesia and involving augmented acoustic instruments as well as dynamic interactions between live performers and computer systems.


She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music in Composition-Theory from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Yonsei University. Recognition for her work includes the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) Best Student Music Award, the Marcelle Deschênes Prize in Electronic Music, First Prize in the Sweetwater/SEAMUS Commission Award, a MacDowell Fellowship, the Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship, and the Tanglewood Music Center Elliott Carter Memorial Composer Fellowship. Her works have been presented internationally at festivals and conferences including SEAMUS, EMM Festival, MA/IN Festival, MATA Festival, NYCEMF, ICMC, Marginale Festival, NoiseFloor, CHIMEFest, and Sound Spaces.
