The Centre Pompidou presents a special screening of four seminal works by Anthony McCall, from the collections of the Musée national d’art moderne, shown here in their original 16mm format. Created between 1973 and 1974, Line Describing a Cone, Cone of Variable Volume, Partial Cone, and Conical Solidmark the first steps in an exploration of the volumetric properties of the cinematic medium. Working from geometric forms drawn directly onto the filmstrip, McCall radically redefines the cinematic event: it is no longer the projected image that constitutes the work, but the beam of light itself—made visible through haze—which sculpts space into a volume unfolding in time. In constant motion, each projection becomes a performance in its own right: projectors, film, and projectionists act as the agents of ephemeral xenon architectures, through which visitors are invited to move and physically situate themselves.
