Koral

Playing music collectively using smartphones

Developed by the Association Arts Convergences in partnership with Ircam (ISMM team), KORAL is an application for playing music intuitively and playfully in a group, turning smartphones into musical instruments. Simple and customizable gestures can trigger musical sounds and patterns that are automatically and harmoniously integrated into a collective music piece. This approach aims at stimulating creative expression and encouraging mutual listening and support.

The goal is to provide health and social organizations with an effective solution for running music workshops. The KORAL application was developed using a user-centred approach, conducting workshops and adjusting functionalities based on user feedback. More than a hundred people, with a large range of profiles, participated in 40 workshops held by the Association Arts Convergences in 2024. Beyond testing the application and making it more reliable, the KORAL workshops, very well received, confirmed the relevance of the approach. The developement are pursued in 2025 and 2026.

The application KORAL takes advantage of developments by the ISMM team, in particular the Comote application for smartphones (Apple and Android) and a series of Max For Live plugins developed on the basis of the MuBu for Max package.
