Deepen your creative practice through the exploration of MuBu and CataRT’s advanced features for sound analysis, synthesis and interaction in Max.
Develop proficiency in MuBu and CataRT for sound creation, analysis, processing and synthesis, through the use of granular and concatenative synthesis techniques, audio analysis methods and machine learning approaches applied to composition and sound creation practices.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to use the core functionalities of MuBu and CataRT within a sound creation environment, structure, manipulate and manage audio data in MuBu and implement advanced sound synthesis techniques including granular, concatenative, additive, PSOLA and spatial synthesis. They will be able to use audio analysis and segmentation tools for the processing, organisation and exploration of sound materials, mobilise machine learning approaches for sound creation using MuBu, PiPo, Mimo and XMM and develop corpus-based concatenative synthesis workflows within production, composition and performance contexts.
Composers, sound artists, electronic musicians, sound designers, digital artists, developers of interactive audio tools, researchers, teachers, advanced students and professionals wishing to deepen their practices in sound synthesis, analysis and processing.
Some parts of the program may be adjusted according to developments in the software environments on which the course is based.
At the end of each session, exercises are assigned. Participants are required to complete and submit them to the instructor within the specified deadlines, before the following session. These submissions are reviewed collectively and contribute to the continuous assessment of learning outcomes and competencies.
Session 1: Tuesday, January 12 - Getting Started with the MuBu and CataRT Environment
Session 2: Tuesday, January 19 - Manipulating Data in MuBu
Session 3: Tuesday, January 26 - Implementing Granular Synthesis Techniques
Session 4: Tuesday, February 2 - Analysing and Segmenting Audio Materials
Session 5: Tuesday, February 9 - Advanced Sound Synthesis Methods
Session 6: Tuesday, February 16 - Applying Machine Learning with MuBu
Session 7: Tuesday, February 23 - Exploring Corpus-Based Concatenative Synthesis
Session 8: Tuesday, March 2 - Developing Advanced CataRT Practices
Assessment is conducted throughout the course through practical exercises assigned after each session and submitted by participants for review.
To ensure optimal learning conditions, participants are advised to have a stable internet connection and a dual-screen setup to facilitate the simultaneous monitoring of demonstrations, hands-on activities and communication with the teacher.
The software and environments used in this training (Max, MuBu, and CataRT and Ableton Live) are neither provided nor included in the registration fees. Participants are therefore required to obtain the necessary licenses, subscriptions, or usage rights prior to the start of the training in order to take part in practical exercises under proper conditions and follow the course.
Max is a software developed by Cycling ’74 and distributed by the Ircam. Ableton Live is a commercial software available from its publisher. MuBu and CataRT are extensions developed by the Ircam for the Max environment and require prior installation of Max. Some teaching examples may also use the bach and spat5 extensions, available via the Ircam Forum, subject to the access and licensing conditions defined by Ircam and their respective publishers.
Participants are responsible for ensuring, before the start of the training, that they have the required software versions and the necessary licenses for their use.
