Sound Design
Application of a sound design methodology: from defining a sonic identity to sketching the sound of an object.
Application of a sound design methodology: from defining a sonic identity to sketching the sound of an object.
Sound design aims to shape the sonic characteristics of an object, service or brand in order to create a coherent and identifiable experience. This approach combines perceptual analysis, sound creation and prototyping to imagine new uses and sonic metaphors.
The methodology developed by the Sound Perception and Design team at IRCAM covers all stages of the design process: problem analysis, development of sonic sketches and mock-ups, prototyping and perceptual evaluation.
Participants explore collective analysis methods based on a SpeaK vocabulary of descriptive terms for sounds, as well as sound sketching tools such as SkataRT. The work involves designing new sound objects and uses in relation to a brand identity, the values of an institution, or more broadly the functional, aesthetic and sensory dimensions of a project.
This course is aimed at professionals who need to integrate sound design approaches into project development within companies, institutions or creative organisations. It is relevant to project managers, designers, engineers and anyone wishing to understand sound design methodologies and the challenges related to audio identity, user experience and sonic usage. Students from fields such as sound, design, digital arts or creative technologies can deepen their understanding of sound design methods and prototyping techniques applied to innovative professional contexts.
