For the exhibition "Homo Spatius, designers de l'espace" at the Cité du design de Saint-Étienne from November 3, 2021 to January 31, 2022, IRCAM, in collaboration with the composer Daniele Ghisi, is offering visitors a new sound installation at the entrance to the exhibition.
Inspired by the continuous quest for new territories and by the various accounts of it, this electroacoustic composition echoes the exhibition's scenography. It invites to a spatial and temporal journey.
When visitors enter the corridor that leads to the first exhibition room, four pairs of loudspeakers placed at different locations will give them the impression of arriving in an indeterminate place, somewhere on earth, a place where time flows in an indeterminate way, between a distant past and a distant future. Each passage in this corridor will cause a brief encounter with different imaginary vehicles that will manifest themselves as successive waves of sound. Visitors will be able to associate specific images with these sounds: a rocket roaring its engines, a voice shouting from the back of a car or a hot air balloon rustling with obscure conversations, but nothing directly illustrative will emerge. As the visitor moves through the corridor, they will have the impression of going back in time. If they pause, closing their eyes, they will feel like they are on an immobile journey through space and time.
