La compositrice Diana Soh
© Daniel Campbell
Luciano Berio rejected the artificial convention of folk songs accompanied by piano. His Folk Songs recompose these songs through orchestration and vocal technique. The oral traditions of Sardinia, Sicily, and Armenia are thus captured through written composition. A twentieth-century utopia, expressive and universalizing: is it still fruitful for the twenty-first? Diana Soh, for her part, draws on the music of her childhood, weaving it into her own compositions that incorporate electronics. Where do musical origins actually lie? Darius Milhaud may well have asked himself the same question in his own time, and his Le Bœuf sur le toit looks more toward Brazil than the Mediterranean.
