Who has really read Peter Pan? Disney's animated film retained only its light, playful side: Captain Hook's villainy and the sweet tinkling of Tinker Bell. But the novel written in 1911 by the Scottish author James Matthew Barrie has little or nothing to do with that harmless story. It is a caustic, profound novel that deals with the ambiguity of mothers, dysfunctional families, social decline, and the refusal to grow up and enter the world of adults. In this brilliant new translation, Wendy is given her due and becomes a central, complex character. Nathalie Azoulai breathes new life into this whimsical, melancholic, and at times tragic novel.
