In 1928, Virginia Woolf imagined the life of Orlando, born a man in Elizabethan England, who becomes a woman in Constantinople in the seventeenth century and journeys through the centuries to the present day. A century later, this hybrid text, which defies categorization and plays with norms, continues to raise questions for us about our relationship to gender, to history, and to individual and collective identities.
