Contemporary Arabic-language poetry performed bilingually by the poets themselves: this is the ambition of the international platform Shaeirat, which has produced and presented internationally, in various bilingual pairings (from Arabic into French, Spanish, English, German, Dutch, and Greek), several major poets, including Rasha Omran (Syria), Hend Jouda and Carol Sansour (Palestine), and Soukaina Habiballah (Morocco). This work is not without its challenges, as it constantly confronts a whole series of preconceptions and expectations surrounding what it means to be Arab and a poet, Arab and a woman, or an Arab woman and a poet. Moroccan poet Mouna Ouafik powerfully embodies these paradoxes. Her flamboyant poetic stand-up, with poems drawn from her latest collection of the same name, De la femelle chimpanzée à Darwin (From the Female Chimpanzee to Darwin), boldly reshuffles the deck of what it can mean to be an Arabic-language poet today.
