In Espèces d’espaces, a hybrid show halfway between a philosophical essay and an evocative poem, Georges Perec explores every aspect of his relationship to space, from the space contained on a blank page to the space within a complete void, or even the urban space. This surprising text, which is characterized by a great outspokenness and freedom of interpretation, gives composer Philippe Hurel the possibility to build a musical story about everyday things, from the most common to the most hideous. Covering from the simplest description to the darkest side of humanity, this vivid and contrasting partition allows for many set design and musical interpretations. A singer, an actor, a dozen musicians, and a screen with speakers transmitting prerecorded text extracts share the stage. Each of these different "characters" speak out in a nervous counterpoint, with no clear dedicated function. Just as the narrative oscillates between descriptive logic and unpredictability, the set design imagined by Alexis Forestier flows between the inside space and the outside space, the known and the unknown, the frame and the trail.
