The team's research focuses on the perception of environmental sounds in order to provide a solid foundation for the domain of application of sound design by combining knowledge in acoustics with psychoacoustics and cognitive psychology.

The team's research project on the perception of environmental sound (i.e. sounds that are neither speech nor music) is structured around three thematics presented below. The results of this research is submitted to three successive steps (analysis, creation, validation) that define the global process of sound design as it is carried out by the team for artistic, industrial, and educational projects. In conclusion, the team offers general rules and principles associated with the signification of sounds, while maintaining the aesthetic approach found in the music field.

Interest Areas

Sound Sources. The team's first thematic concerns environmental sounds made by a sound source, by the interaction among objects, or by the deformation of an object. The sound result is not an intentional production, but the study can be quite instructive for applications in sound design. Our work focuses on different levels of descriptions of sound sources marrying the perceived characteristics of a sound signal (timbre, temporal contour, etc.) to those of the source (structure, interaction, etc.). The current French national ANR project, LoudNat, will make it possible to clarify the desciption of environmetal sounds including sound levels that vary during a given time.

Sounds for Signaling. The second set of themes relates to a new generation of sounds that can be found in our daily lives: sound used for signaling. In this case, the sounds are produced with the intention of communicating. This is an important issue for sound designers because these sounds are on digital supports, easily malleable, and can be integrated in miniaturized systems for diffusion. Our work consisted in studying the relations between the parameters of the signal used to adequately communicate specific information (emergency, identity, etc) and to assess the impact of this information when used in situ, especially in the framework of industrial collaborations with the SNCF and Renault, or, more recently, within the context of ANR project RoadSense.

Dynamic Sound Interactions. The third set of themes is new and combines the two preceding themes on questions relating to sound interaction with objects in our daily lives. The focus here is creating a dynamic interaction between an object - in principle a "quiet" one - and a user via the addition of a sound component. This is called a dynamic sound interaction. The studies undertaken consider the sound component combined with a gesture in learning processes during the manipulation of objects from our daily lives for a specific use. This work is carried out in particular within the framework of ANR project Legos.
