Cursus 1

Practical Training in Computer Music

September 2012 to April 2013

This hands-on training program provides a dozen young composers under the age of 35 with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the theoretical and compositional issues involved in computer music. The long-term objective of this intensive, 8-month program is to provide them with the technical independence necessary to create express their musical ideas.

The production of a short work, presented to the public during a workshop-concert in IRCAM’s Espace de projection serves as a focus for each student's education. This work can be a mixed-music work (for solo instrument and electronics performed by a student from the CNSMDP), an purely electronic work, an algorithmic composition work without electronics, or a sound installation.

Throughout the program, 7 mini projects will be required of each composer, enabling them to learn new computer tools (created by IRCAM or elsewhere) putting the knowledge gained into practice, while preparing their final work.

Classes are taught by a team of specialized computer-music professors (Éric Daubresse, Jean Lochard, Grégoire Lorieux, Mikhail Malt, Alexander Mihalic) and by the composer Mauro Lanza. Moreover, students are able to take advantage of individual encounters with experienced composers and meet with the IRCAM research teams.

Finally, the life of the institute, its research and creation seminars, concerts, and symposiums all serve as a stimulus for writing electronics and provide a complement to the training program, giving young composers a complete vision of the uses of new technologies in music.

Cursus 2

Specialized Training in Composition, Research, and Music Technology

October 2012 to June 2013

At the end of the Cursus 1 program, five or six composers are chosen for a second year of training and professionalization during which they carry out an ambitious creative project. This project is intended to be carried out with a small instrumental or vocal ensemble with electronics or with a visual component in the framework of either an installation or a performance. The works created by the Cursus 2 composers are included in IRCAM's concert season, primarily during IRCAM's annual festival-academy, ManiFeste, taking advantage of the institute's production and communication facilities. For the past decade, an established partnership with the Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains makes it possible for couples made up of young composers and video artists to create unusual projects supported by both institutions.

Following a short semester dedicated to increasing the knowledge and savoir-faire learned during Cursus 1, the year is devoted to the writing and production of the participants' projects under the aegis of the IRCAM team of specialized computer-music professors (Éric Daubresse, Jean Lochard, Grégoire Lorieux, Mikhail Malt, Alexander Mihalic) and the composer Mauro Lanza.
