Au loin

The fragment-works by György Kurtág, aphorism of a lost language, are like messages in bottles cast in the direction of an alter ego; a poet and musician of another era.

Thomas Adès also aspires to a lost paradise, but one that is a cohesive idyll: written at the age of 24, his first quartet invites Poussin, the ghosts of Couperin, Elgar, and Schubert. The final quartet of Jonathan Harvey with electronics is void of nostalgia; it sends its "successive lives" into the space of the concert hall through elevatory cycles.
