Prerequisite
Fundamental knowledge of Max/MSP programming (Basic tutorials 1 – 22, Data tutorials 1 – 5, MIDI tutorials 1 – 5, MSP Max 5 tutorials 1 – 18) or successful completion of the First Steps with Max/MSP program.
Upon completion of this course participants will have acquired the foundations of perception of space and different techniques for spatialization. They will be able to construct their own basic spatialization modules in Max/MSP, and control them in real-time or off-line via different methods.
Description
This course is an introduction to spatialization. The basic concepts and functions of the IRCAM Spatializator are addressed:
- introduction to spatial listening and spatialization
- Spat's internal architecture
- listening to standard configurations: ORTF, binaural, 5.1, 4 or 8 loudspeakers
- simulations of concert halls and memorization of parameters
- elaboration and memorization of trajectories
- spatialization of several sound sources
- introduction to the control of Spat

Didactic Material and Assessments
Hands-on work sessions take place on individual workstations (iMac, MIDI keyboard, headphones). Instructors use a workstation connected to a video projector and a quadraphonic sound system. Either paper or electronic teaching aids will be available for students.
