Write Objects for Max/MSP
Advanced Level
Prerequisite
Participants must have a high level of expertise in Max/MSP and experience programming in C is strongly recommended.
Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to create external objects for Max 6 in C (control, UI, DSP).
The course will be taught by Cycling'74 team: David Zicarelli (Chief executive officer), Joshua Kit Clayton and Emmanuel Jourdan (developers).
Basic Topics
- Javascript and the new 2D drawing API
- Use of the Max SDK for C object development
- Techniques for using C++ to write Max externals
- Reading and writing JSON data files
- Use of the t_dictionary to support the new dict.* objects
- Developing MSP objects and the new MSP64 API
- Using the scheduler and ITM
- Supporting Max 6 features (circular menu, etc.)
Advanced Topics
These topics will be addressed depending on student interest
- Explanation of scheduler priority options
- Object reference counting and memory management
- UI object development and graphics optimization techniques
- Embedding data in a patcher
- Writing extension objects
- The parameter system

Didactic Material and Assessments
Hands-on work sessions take place on individual workstations. Instructors use a workstation connected to a video projector and a quadraphonic sound system. Either paper or electronic teaching aids will be available for students.
Participants must bring their own laptop computer with Max 6 and an IDE such as Xcode (Mac) or Visual Studio (Windows).
