Haptic sound applications platform for music initiation

Introduction

The project focuses on the development of a sound generation system, bringing sound immersion, haptic response movement and visual immersion into play. To insure the coherence of these interactions a model and object methods are used to centralize the different elements of physical and sensory behavior.

Work Description/Objectives

The proposed musical demonstration (an interactive installation for science and technology museums, theme parks...) has two goals: firstly, to enable users to discover and learn about sound space and music, thanks to their immersion in visual, sound, and haptic environments, and secondly, to train professionals. This system offers a rich way - combining education and fun - of creating and spatializing sound and music (e.g. sound design).

This process, which can appear initially very abstract and difficult to non-specialists, will be made easier via the use of highly developed graphic representations and haptic commands. In order to observe and modify sound/music object and explore timbre's multidimensional space haptic command offer the best mode of access. The sound and visual environments interact with one and other and with the haptic system.

This project is aimed primarily at the general public but also at experienced users for use in composition studios. It foreshadows larger distribution systems (meant for schools, conservatories, etc.) and even, in the long term, systems for the general public (synthesizers with haptic commands).
