Winners and Project Proposals

Ben Hackbarth (USA) [website]

Proposal Abstract: "This project consists of creating a musically novel sample-based synthesis algorithm consisting of the following generalized components:

  1. A database of sound files is segmented and analyzed. The analysis is based on numerous spectral features that identify the essential time-varying characteristics of each sample in the database (such as energy, centroid, HFC and pitch). Segmentation is optional and is specified by the user if multi-event sound files are included.
  2. The spectrum of a separate audio signal acts as a template for creating a multi-layered texture using sample segments from the database. At any given moment, the texture consists of two or more simultaneous samples that are chosen so that their sum in some way approximates the spectral morphology of the template.
  3. The 'score' of the output texture (i.e. sample names, durations, amplitudes, transpositions, envelope and filter settings) can be exported in various text formats and subsequently synthesized with a program of choice (i.e. Csound, Max/MSP, Pure Data, etc.)."

Mari Kimura (Japan/USA) [website]

Proposal Abstract: "This research proposal describes how collaborating with the Real-Time Musical Interactions Team at IRCAM on extracting musical expression from the Augmented Violin (a bowing tracking system developed by that team), would help enabling new compositional approaches for interactive computer music.

As a violinist/composer using the Augmented Violin creating several works and performing them over dozen times in the past few years, I would like to contribute my expertise in conducting detail studies of bowing using the Augmented Violin, developing new ways of understanding musical expression and creating a new ways of interaction between humans and machines."
