Public: Musicians-Performers
Works for acoustic instruments and real-time electronics are progressively making up their own repertoire. IRCAM has joined forces with conservatories, music schools, and instrumental ensembles to organize an annual series of courses intended for novice musicians and young music professionals. This program introduces the participants to the technology used in musical creation and to play instrumental music with electronics in new musical situations.
The performance of a mixed work - a real chamber music situation featuring the instrumentalist and their electronic double - requires attentive listening and sharp attention to the instrumental gesture. The performance raises the questions of how to capture sound, of interaction with the transformation of the instrumentalist's performance in real-time, the relationship between the pre-recorded sessions and their diffusion, of de-centering and spatializing the sound source. These problems will be addressed in a series of hands-on workshops, letting the young musician fine-tune his/her listening, develop confidence in the sounds he/she produces, and open doors to new musical experiences.
This series of courses is divided in three sections:
One or several workshops to discover new technology available for instrumentalists covering sound recording, processing, and broadcasting. The workshops will take a look at the most up-to-date investigations carried out at IRCAM in the field of instrument research,
Work sessions on mixed works to be held with an instructor, computer music designers, and perhaps even composers,
A public presentation of the work carried out during a commentated workshop.
Participants will have the opportunity to attend an IRCAM concert during the concert season.
Upon completion of the Mixed Music for Instrumentalists program, several young performers will be invited to create short works for soloist and electronics in real-time in collaboration with composers-in-training at IRCAM.
This year, the courses take place (or are organized in collaboration with):
