Intuitive and Expressive Digital Instrument-Making: a New Concept in Vocally Controlled Instruments
This project aims to create wind instruments controlled by the voice. This project continues in the same vein as the WINDSET project which came to a successful conclusion with the production of physical models of the trumpet, the trombone, and the saxophone. These models are now marketed by the company Arturia as a software program (Brass) playable via a MIDI control such as a keyboard or a sequencer.
The twofold objective of this project is to develop never-before-seen physical models of wind instruments such as the clarinet, oboe, bassoon, or flute and to grant them an intuitive control that uses the characteristics of the voice derived from a real-time analysis of the vocal signal. A large part of the project's experimentation is consecrated to mapping, the correspondence between the descriptors found in the vocal signal, and the control parameters of the physical models.
